Activities of the Network

Network activities are centered around 4 key areas aimed at fulfilling the mission of the Network.

a. Professional Development and Training Programs:The Network will implement programs at multiple locations throughout the region covering a broad range of topics and practice areas so as to appeal to all current and potential Network members.
b. Publications:The Network aims at enriching Arab legal scholarship by publishing a biannual legal journal that will include articles on current legal issues, essays and book reviews.
c. Mentoring Program: This program endeavors to match experienced members of the legal profession with new lawyers seeking guidance in their careers. Matches will be made based on interest, location and other criteria the program participants may devise.
d. Women’s Advocacy: The Network aims to support women’s rights advocacy by partnering with women’s rights groups and by developing the skills of women’s rights advocates through professional development programs, publications and this website.

 

 

TRAINING OF TRAINERS, JORDAN 25-26 JANUARY,2007

 

The Arab's Women Legal Network, in cooperation with United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) held Training program “Training of Trainers” for 8 members in Jordan at AWLN headquarters. The goal for this program is building a team of trainers that the network can depend on to train AWLN members on different topics.

INTERNATIONAL PRINCIPLES AND PRACTIES ON FREE AND FAIR ELECTIONS, NOVEMBER1, 2007

The Arab's Women Legal Network, in cooperation with National Democratic Institute training program organized a workshop that dealt with international principles and practices on free and fair elections AWLN members at AWLN headquarters in Jordan. The goal for this program was to know the role of NGO in elections monitoring in addition to standard structure and media strategy for elections.

 

THIRD ANNUAL MEETING AND TRAINING PROGRAM, JORDAN, JUNE 13-15, 2007

One hundred and forty AWLN members from 15 Arab countries and the Palestinian Territories attended AWLN’s Annual General Meeting and Training Program in Amman, Jordan from June 13 to 15.  Held under the patronage of the Jordanian Minister of Justice, His Excellency Sharif Al Zubi at the Holiday Inn in Amman, Jordan, opening ceremonies were attended by members of the Jordanian Judicial Council, embassy representatives and friends of AWLN.  Participants and honored guests were welcomed by AWLN Chairperson Zoubaida Assoul of Algeria.

EXECTIVE BOARD MEETIN, PARTNER MEETING-JUNE 12, 2007

 The AWLN Annual General Meeting was preceded by a meeting at AWLN’s Amman Headquarters of the Executive Board followed by  the Partners’ Meeting attended by AWLN staff and Board members, representatives of the ALWN Hubs in Algeria, Kuwait and Lebanon, ABA advisors and a representative of MEPI.  Meeting on the morning of June 12th, Board members reviewed administrative and financial reports and approved amendments to the Articles of Association for submission to AWLN members at the upcoming Annual Meeting.  The work of AWLN’s Liaisons was discussed and it was determined that the Liaisons needed to be recognized for their work and to have incentives for volunteering their time to AWLN such as opportunities for training and to provide input.

WORKSHOP ON THE LEGAL SYSTEM FOR DEALING WITH SECURITEIES, AMMAN, JORDAN MAY 8 AND9,2007

 

The workshop on securities law held in Amman on May 8th and 9th under the patronage of Jordanian Securities Commissioner Dr. Bassam Al Sakit and His Excellency Minister of Justice Sharif Al Zu’bi was a partnership between AWLN and the Securities Commission of Jordan.  Held at the Commission’s Amman Headquarters, the two day comprehensive workshop was attended by approximately one hundred Jordanian judges along with lawyers from the public and private sectors and covered:

·          The legal system for issuing and exchanging securities

·          Monitoring the securities market

·          Protection of investors

·          Licensing businesses to deal in securities

·          The duties of issuers of securities

·          Recent developments in the Amman Stock Exchange

·          The electronic exchange system

·          The technical and legal aspects of the securities deposit center

·          Exchange contracts, settlements, setoffs and deliveries in exchange for payment 

·          Crimes related to dealing with securities and their punishment

 

In welcoming the participants, Securities Commission President Dr. Al Sakit commended the cooperation between the Commission and the judiciary pointing out that "the Commission's monitoring role is in harmony

with the role of the judiciary in protecting the investors".

 

 

 

A TRAINING OF TRAINERS, JORDAN 26-27 APRIL,2007 

  

A Training of Trainers (TOT) trainings were conducted in Jordan during 26-27 April, 2007 in the following areas:

      - Alternative Dispute Resolutions skills

      - E-commerce laws

      - Leadership and communication skills

 

The three AWLN Training Series and curriculum in the above subjects were finalized by the ABA during April. Participants in the TOT trainings were 18 participants from the Hub countries (Lebanon, Kuwait & Algeria) and from Jordan the headquarters country. The TOT Trainings Agenda has covered in the first day, the Interactive Teaching Techniques for all participants, while in the second day; participants were divided into three groups in order to be trained in one of the above AWLN Training Series.

LEGAL EDUCATION WORKSHOP,EGYPT,NOVEMBER 30 - DECEMBER 1,2006

The Arab's Women Legal Network, in cooperation with the American University in Cairo and the American Bar Association convened a workshop on legal education from the 30th of November to the 1st of December. Thirty-one women academics and law professors participated in the workshop from Kuwait , Morocco, Jordan, Tunisia, Algeria, Palestine, Lebanon, Yemen, Saudi Arabia and Egypt. Judge Zoubida Assoul, Chairperson of the Executive Board, and Dr.Enid Hill, Chair of the Department of Law at the American University in Cairo, gave the opening remarks welcoming the participants

SECOND ANNUAL GENERAL ASSEMBLY, ALGERIA, JUNE 28-30, 2006

The AWLN conducted its second annual General Assembly from June 28-30, 2006, in Algeria, under the patronage of His Excellency President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, and in cooperation with the American Bar Association. President Bouteflika was represented by Minister and advisor Ali BouGhazi. The Algerian Minister of Family and Women Affairs, Nawwara Ja'far, attended the conference, as did the ambassadors of a number of Arab countries. This meeting required more than two months of preparations in Algeria along with a month in Amman, Jordan. The planning began with the mailing of invitation letters to all members and the receipt of affirmative responses from those who would attend the conference.

 LIASONS MEETING, ALGERIA, JUNE 28, 2006

During the second annual General Assembly, a meeting between all liaisons was held. During the session, a number of topics were discussed, including techniques for strengthening cooperation between the AWLN and liaisons as well as the communication channels among the liaisons. The meeting was attended by Ms. Erin Walsh, Senior Advisor at the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs.

 

"ALTERNATIVE DISPUTE RESOLUTION II" WORKSHOP, JORDAN, MAY 29 – JUNE 1, 2006

A second training workshop on Alternative Dispute Resolution brought together fourteen participants from Qatar, Iraq, Palestine and Lebanon.

 

"ALTERNATIVE DISPUTE RESOLUTION I" WORKSHOP, JORDAN, MAY 21-24, 2006

The AWLN, in cooperation with the American Bar Association's Middle East Gender Program, held a four-day training workshop on Alternative Dispute Resolution. Fifteen participants from Iraq, Jordan, Oman, Palestine and Saudi Arabia attended the training.

 

"STRATEGIC PLANNING" WORKSHOP, JORDAN, MAY 19-21, 2006

The AWLN, conducted a Strategic Planning workshop, along with an Executive Board meeting in Amman, Jordan from May 19-21, 2006. Working in cooperation with the American Bar Association, the main purpose of this event was to formalize the AWLN’s strategic plan, which outlines the Network’s objectives and tasks to be implemented in the coming two to five years.

 

"E-COMMERCE AND INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY" WORKSHOP, BAHRAIN, APRIL 1-2, 2006

The AWLN Organized a conference on "E-Commerce and Intellectual Property" in cooperation with the Bahraini Ministry of Justice. An Executive Board meeting was held during the conference.

 

“TRAINING OF TRAINERS” WORKSHOP ON EQUALITY PRINCIPLES AND LEGAL EDUCATION, MOROCCO, JANUARY 18-20, 2006

This three-day training program was offered to a group of twenty-three women throughout the region with a demonstrated interest in public education on women’s rights. Among the group were eleven AWLN national liaisons, who remained in Morocco for a fourth day dedicated to developing guidelines for liaison work on the national level. The training program was led by Ms. Aicha al Karche, AWLN’s secretary, Judge Judith Chirlin from the Los Angeles County Superior Court (United States, California), Mrs. Inaam Al Acha, Training and Consulting Program Manager, and Mrs. Aicha Lukhmas, Moroccan lawyer and activist in the field of human rights.

 

SECOND JUDICIAL CONFERENCE, MOROCCO, JANUARY 23-24, 2006

The AWLN gathered participants from throughout the North Africa region for the Second Judicial Conference. Thirty-seven female judges and prosecutors attended from Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt.

FIRST JUDICIAL CONFERENCE, LEBANON, NOVEMBER 25-26, 2005

The AWLN, in cooperation with the Center for Legal Studies in the Arab World of the Faculty of Law and Political Science at the University of Saint-Joseph, convened its First Judicial Conference. Fifty participants from Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine and Yemen attended this two-day program.

LAWYER’S MEETING, EGYPT, OCTOBER 2, 2005

The AWLN Executive Board hosted an open meeting with Egyptian lawyers, law professors and heads of non-governmental organizations to introduce the Network’s activities, objectives and future plans. The Board received excellent feedback on the activities and structure of the Network and on issues of interest to Egyptian legal professionals. While in Cairo, members of the Board also met with representatives of the Arab League, the Arab Women’s Organization and the Arab Lawyers’ Union. The Board also convened its second Executive Board meeting to work on matters relating to the development of the Network.

FIRST ANNUAL MEETING AND TRAINING PROGRAM, JORDAN, JULY 16-18, 2005

Under the patronage of Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah, the AWLN was formally launched on July 16, 2005. More than 100 women gathered in Amman, Jordan from sixteen countries in the Middle East and North Africa - Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, KSA, Syria, Tunisia, UAE and Yemen -for the Network’s first annual General Assembly and first training program .
